It is reckoned that the fish slates, a type of red-shaped vessels in ancient Greece, were tableware for serving fish; and that the central dent served to collect the fish's fluids. Their manufacture began in Attic workshops, around the end of the 5th and beginning of the 4th century BC. In those slates, fish and other sea creatures were depicted as part of the written decoration symbolizing the sea, which was crossed by the bull from the myth of the abduction of Europe. Despite their plausible connection to eating fish, their use has not been confirmed to date, and it is also believed that they accompanied the dead on their journey to the Underworld.
