In ancient Greece and in the aesthetics of ancient clothing, folds played a primary role, as evidenced by the representations of ancient vases and marble statues, examples of moderation and simplicity.
Ancient Greek clothing consisted of rectangular fabrics worn by both sexes. They wrapped them in various ways around the body forming folds. The main ones were the “chiton” (type of tunic), which was worn over the body and sewn on the shoulders, and the “himation” (simple outer garment), which served as an overcoat. They were simple and functional clothes, reflecting the spirit of ancient Greek culture.
Their inspiration is based on the ancient fabrics that came from the basic raw materials, animal, plant or even metal, with the main ones being wool, linen and silk. For the weaving of these raw materials, the vertical loom with weights was used. The resulting fabrics, depending on the type of garment for which they were intended, were sewn with raphides or needles made of copper, iron or bone. Unlike the Minoan and Mycenaean eras during which the production of clothing required special sewing and cutting, from the Archaic era onwards, clothing was based on a fabric in a rectangular shape, as it emerged from the loom or sometimes several pieces sewn together.
