This remarkable bronze sculpture of a horse and rider is the finest surviving example of its kind from antiquity.
It was recovered in pieces from an ancient shipwreck and later restored, particularly in areas such as the tail and midsection. The horse is depicted in a powerful gallop, capturing the intensity of a racing moment. Engraved on its right thigh is a figure of Nike raising a wreath—an emblem commonly associated with prized horses in ancient times.
The animal’s movement and musculature are rendered with striking realism and precision. The rider is a young boy of small stature, whose facial features suggest African origin. His slight and less imposing figure stands in sharp contrast to the strength and grandeur of the horse. He turns his head to the left, with unkempt hair, and is dressed in sandals and a short chiton that flutters with the speed. He likely held the reins in his left hand and a whip in his right. The sculpture, created by an unknown artist, was probably dedicated in an important sanctuary.
