A vessel with two handles positioned at the waist. The name of this particular vessel derives from the words "amphi" (on both sides) and "phero" (to carry). Amphorae were primarily used for the transport and storage of wine, oil, water, small fruits, grains, fish, and other goods.
There are two main types of amphorae:
A. One-piece amphorae with a neck and body forming a continuous curve.
B. Amphorae with a distinct neck, where the neck is clearly separated from the body. This category includes Panathenaic amphorae as well as pointed-bottom amphorae, which feature cylindrical handles and a body tapering to a sharp base. These amphorae were used for exporting goods, which is why they are commonly found in the wrecks of ancient merchant ships.
A distinct group of black-figure vessels, recognized by their shape, decoration, and often their inscriptions, consists of the amphorae awarded as prizes in the Panathenaic Games. Their characteristic tight handles, narrow neck, and base derive from an Attic storage vessel type that first appeared in the Late Geometric period (760-700 BC). The body was usually painted black, while the neck featured a simple geometric motif that gave these vessels the name Amphorae. The winner had the right to sell both the vessel and its contents, which explains the widespread distribution of Panathenaic amphorae both within and beyond the Greek world.
Pointed-bottom amphorae, usually of large size, were widely used in antiquity for the storage and transport of various goods, primarily wine. However, many were also used for storing oil, cheese, salted fish, or even water, often in a secondary capacity. In some cases, amphorae were also used in burials.
