An amphora is a vessel with two handles placed at the belly. Its name derives from the Greek words amphi (“on both sides”) and phero (“to carry”). Amphorae were primarily used for transporting and storing wine, oil, water, grains, dried fruits, fish, and other goods.
Two main types of amphorae are distinguished:
-
Type A: With neck and body forming a continuous curve.
-
Type B: With a clearly distinct neck. This type includes the Panathenaic amphorae and the pointed-base amphorae, the latter featuring cylindrical handles and a sharply tapering base.
Pointed-base amphorae, usually of large size, were widely used in antiquity for the storage and transport of various goods—most commonly wine. However, they also carried oil, cheese, salted fish, or even water (often in secondary use). In some cases, amphorae were also employed in burials. These vessels, especially those intended for trade, are often found in ancient shipwrecks.
Among the most famous are the Panathenaic amphorae, large black-figure vessels awarded as prizes in the Panathenaic Games. Their distinctive narrow neck, sturdy handles, and base trace back to an Attic storage vessel type of the Late Geometric period. Typically, the body was painted black, while the neck bore a simple decorative motif that gave rise to the term SOS Amphorae.
Victors were free to sell both the amphora and its contents, which contributed to the wide circulation of Panathenaic amphorae throughout the Greek world and beyond.
