The "Plaggona" (ancienter Greek doll) was one of the girls' favorite toys in ancient Greece and a forerunner of the modern doll.

This kind of doll was made of wood, ivory, and mostly clay. There are Plaggona findings from the 7th century BC in the Cyclades islands, Peloponnese, Epirus and Macedonia. They hail from religious figurines, as they were found in shrines, but over the centuries they evolved into a girls' toy. They depict a female figure with complex hairstyles. Their arms and legs were moving and they were connected by a thread with the main body. In addition to playing, they also had an educational character, as an introduction of the girl to her role and obligations as a woman in ancient society. The Plaggonas were offered to goddess Artemis on the eve of the girl's wedding. They are a rare type of findings that used to illuminate children's world in antiquity. They are often found in children's graves, while depictions of children holding similar dolls decorate epitaphs, mainly in the area of Attica.
