The Sphinx of Olympia on a Black Marble Base in Bronze

The Sphinx of Olympia in bronze on a black marble base consists one of the most enigmatic mythical creatures of ancient Greek tradition. It is depicted with the head and face of a woman, the body of a lion and the wings of a bird of prey, combining human intelligence with the strength and ferocity of the king of beasts.
The Sphinx is closely associated with the myth of Oedipus and the famous riddle she posed to travellers near Thebes. According to tradition, those who failed to solve it were put to death. Oedipus was the one who successfully answered the riddle, leading to the Sphinx’s downfall.
Olympia, one of the most important pan-Hellenic sanctuaries of antiquity, dedicated to Zeus and renowned as the birthplace of the Olympic Games, has yielded important archaeological finds that illustrate the presence of mythical creatures in ancient Greek art. Sphinxes and other fantastic beings formed part of a broader artistic and symbolic vocabulary, drawing on Greek mythology as well as artistic influences from the ancient Near East.
